George is a man who once skated through life but is now stumbling. When his wife dies, he makes a rash decision to move his kids away from Sydney to the town of Weld, New Zealand.

The Turners are still struggling to settle into Weld life when the septic tank in their rickety house explodes and turns the lawn into a stinking mess. Woody swears he can fix it, and George thinks his day can't get any worse.

Gossip about what really happened to George's late wife has taken over the town, and everyone is talking about it. George comes to realise that if he wants a small-town life, he has to accept it - warts, gossip and all.

George is getting a lot of unexpected attention from some of the ladies, and things come to a head at Fiona's museum fundraiser. Meanwhile, Arlo has a run-in at school with the McNamara family.

When Woody and Smiler find yet another thing wrong with the Turners' house, they have to evacuate to the motel, where George encounters Dean, a feared nemesis from his childhood.

A statue of Weld's celebrated founder has been desecrated. George throws himself into solving the mystery of Sir Frederick Weld's missing head but he should be solving a whole other mystery, much closer to home.

After George finds out about Shay's relationship with Ike and their vandalism of local property, there is conflict in the Turner household. The locals step in to try to help the two of them relate to each other, but Shay remains un-persuadable.

Shay has left George and Arlo and returned to Sydney, and while George is struggling to cope with the aftermath, Jan has flown in the other direction and turned up on his doorstep.
