Baghead

Much of the fun of Baghead is that it'sunclassifiable, by turns a movie-movie lark, an Eric Rohmer-like relationshipcomedy, and a surprisingly effective Friday The 13th kids-in-the-woods slasherfilm.

...the more compelling idea has to do with their interconnectedness, the performance and performative self-consciousness of improv, the multiple illusions of authenticity, the moral claims made by those performing “truth.”

Baghead is about art imitating reality imitating art, or something like that. The film-within-the-film allows the writing/directing pair of Jay and Mark Duplass to comment not only on the filmmaking...

...the engine that truly powers Baghead is the realistic characterizations of, and authentically awkward interactions between, the quartet of aspiring actors stalked by the titular backwoods boogeyman.

The wily, on-the-cheap, made-for-Sundance aesthetic of The Blair Witch Project gets a shout-out in Baghead.
