It's formulaic stuff but done with enough gusto to entertain.
Rapper Lil' Bow Wow (who has since dropped the Lil' ) is responsible for a lot of the movie's success. He is confident and relaxed on the screen, engaging, and has good moves on the basketball court.
The very complicatedness of this layered, homosocial, mentor-mentee liaison makes it compelling, if not exactly coherent.
