...a lavish, sporadically poignant rites-of-passage flick, which paradoxically feels slow while never giving the plot room to manoeuvre.

This is the kind of movie that's best to see on a big screen, where the size of the sky and the colors of the land can do their work.

The movie's greatest liability, though, is the familiarity of the material, much parodied since the glory days of John Ford.
