Mel Gibson är lysande i actionladdad buddy cop-film.

The cross-generational, cross-cultural jokes work well, and it’s hard not to feel for the convincingly geriatric Danny Glover. Gibson, too, wins us over in a tour de force of twitches, sniffs and trigger-happy enthusiasm.

Lethal Weapon is another one of those Bruised Forearm Movies, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, a movie where you and your date grab each other's arm every four minutes and you walk out black and blue and grinning from ear to ear.

From a distance, Lethal Weapon might appear generic, but a closer look reveals something special.

Gibson is truly frightening as the cop about to go into orbit, and Glover is a standout as the down-to-earth lawman with very much to lose.
