Old pro Frankenheimer directs with brisk efficiency, and cinematographer Alan Caso bleeds so much color out of the snowy Michigan locations that they almost look as though they were shot in black and white.

Sinise hams tastefully, though his rabid small-time scoundrel comes off as more mingy than menacing, and Theron wears her character's shifting sympathies about as rotely as she does her orange dye job.
