David Lynch’s Eraserhead remains one of cinema’s most unsettling nightmares

The central conceit of boy-meets-girl-has-mutant-baby is still the stuff of American Gothic nightmares and Lynch's repertoire of soft squelches (...) and panicky gestures remains an enduring archetype of puritan sexual disgust.

It's beautiful and strange, with its profoundly disturbing ambient sound design of industrial groaning, as if filmed inside some collapsing factory or gigantic dying organism.
