Nolte (...) delivers yet more astonishing work, sensitively inhabiting the shambling form of a man whose tragedy is that he can see exactly what a beast he is becoming and yet can do little to stop himself sliding.
Nolte and Coburn are magnificent in this film, which is like an expiation or amends for abusive men.
Overwrought metaphors abound (...), yet Affliction is, nonetheless, a film that haunts.
The real drama in Affliction lies in the clashes between Nolte and Coburn, who both weigh in with monumental performances.
Nolte has always been regarded as a good actor, but, during his long and successful career, rarely has he poured himself into a part the way he does here. His portrayal of Wade is riveting.
