...Gibson stays deep and dark, brutal and bloody, wielding a tomahawk with a proficiency that would make Nathaniel Poe proud. His Martin has history, is history, you feel.

I enjoyed the strength and conviction of Gibson's performance, the sweep of the battle scenes, and the absurdity of the British caricatures.

It's no Braveheart, but even if it loses the odd battle, it still manages to win the war with some blistering heroism.

It's a death-wish revenge thriller posing as a lavishly pastoral historical epic.
