Distant cousins of koalas, wombats lead calm lives in the woods of southeast Australia, sleeping the day away in expertly dug burrows and emerging at night to forage for their tough plants-and-roots diet.

For wombats, the mating season is a departure from the solitary lives they tend to favour. While often slow and lumbering, they can be surprisingly energetic when it is time for courtship, including taking part in a ritualised chase.
