Storytelling doesn't get much better than this.
To Kill a Mockingbird is (...) a time capsule. It expresses the liberal pieties of a more innocent time, the early 1960s, and it goes very easy on the realities of small-town Alabama in the 1930s.
Russell Harlan's black-and-white cinematography is evocative, transporting us to the depression-era deep South. We don't just observe Maycomb from a distance. We feel it. We are there.
...a hauntingly nostalgic portrayal of childhood mischief set in a racially divided Alabama town in the 1930s.
...a classic example of the Hollywood prestige picture, sure. But if only every piece of Oscar-bait were this perfect.
