Paul Scott's saga opens in 1942 India with English policeman Merrick (Tim Pigott-Smith) and British-educated Kumar (Art Malik) who loves Daphne (Susan Wooldridge), whom Merrick hopes to marry.

Merrick is determined to learn the truth after young Daphne claims to have been attacked by a gang of ruffians.

Lady Manners (Rachel Kempson) agrees to raise Daphne's baby; Merrick is Bingham's (Nicholas Farrell) army roommate.

A stone is thrown at the Nawab's car, carrying best-man Merrick and groom Teddie to the wedding.

Lady Manners persuades the governor to review evidence against Hari; with Teddie in Burma, Susan is alone on her birthday.

Susan learns of Teddie's death; Sarah (Geraldine James) goes to Calcutta to visit Merrick, burned trying to save Teddie.

Clark (Stuart Wilson) escorts Sarah; Mabel confesses to Barbie (Peggy Ashcroft); finding Mabel dead sends Susan into labor early.

Sarah meets Hari's interrogator (Nicholas le Prevost); Barbie must leave Rose Cottage; Susan's sanity snaps.

Susan's son escapes a fiery death; Barbie finds Mildred and the adjutant making love.

Intelligence officer Perron (Charles Dance) witnesses one of Merrick's interrogations, then meets Sarah at the Maharanee's; Merrick warns Perron.

Soon after the atomic explosion on Hiroshima, a distressed Sarah learns that Merrick and Susan are engaged.

After the Japanese surrender, Merrick is recalled to Delhi; Perron and Sarah become intimate; Rowan gives Hari's file to Perron.

As British rule ends in August 1947, Perron returns to India and learns Merrick has died.

The truth about Merrick comes out; Perron, Sarah and Susan are on a train during a riot as India prepares to split with Pakistan.
