The subject of Jennifer Venditti's documentary Billy The Kid is a talkative 15-year-old so open-hearted and self-possessed that at times he's almost painful to watch.
...this is a psychological Western that sets out, far more successfully than Young Guns, to explain Billy The Kid as an 1880s juvenile delinquent traumatised by the death of his father-figure into gunning down a bunch of humourless adults.
...Venditti is less concerned with how the world copes with Billy's outré behavior than the way Billy copes with the world...
...Billy finds solace and energy in his imagination, as well as the many imaginative worlds that surround any kid with access to TV and the net.
...a documentary about a real boy who's inner world has been rendered bare for all of us to see...
